AMORE: Bringing Light and Hope to Mindanao

The island of Mindanao has more than a third of the landmass of the Philippines and is home to one-fourth of the country's population, including a significant Muslim minority. Although the quality of life of the people of Mindanao has historically been well below national levels, the island clearly has potential for substantial and accelerated economic growth.

The Alliance for Mindanao Off-grid Renewable Energy (AMORE) Program is a partnership of governments, principally of the United States through the United States Agency for International Development and of the Philippines through the Department of Energy, and private sector partners from the energy industry such as the former Mirant Philippines Foundation and Sunpower Corporation. The AMORE Program energizes poor, remote, and mostly conflict-affected communities that cannot be connected to the power grid using clean and indigenous stand-alone renewable energy systems such as solar and microhydro. The rural electrification program is administered by Winrock International, a US-based non-profit organization.

Phase 1     :     2002-2004
Phase 2     :     2004-2009
Phase 3     :     2009-2013

AMORE, which has been energizing communities since 2002, has developed a sustainable approach to rural electrification hinged on organizing communities for self-propelled development. With energy access as entry point and using their newly built financial and organizational capacity, members of rural communities - organized by AMORE into a Barangay Renewable Energy and Community Development Association (BRECDA) - pursue their own community development projects.

As of June 30, 2012:

Energized 3,947 households with SHS and micro-grid (MHP), equivalent to 21,708individual beneficiaries

Energized 87 schools with 420Wp PV systems (79 schools) and larger capacity PV systems (8 schools) across 8 provinces and 2 cities in Mindanao and 2 provinces and one city in Luzon.

Provided 30,439 students (15,624 male, 154,815 female) with access to improved quality of education

Strengthened capacity of 14 companies, 5 micro-entrepreneurs, 3 micro-finance institutions, 3 local associations and over 60 BRECDAs in rural RE service delivery

Trained 514 (234 male, 280 female) individuals on solar PV technical maintenance and troubleshooting (households and schools), and WASH system operation and maintenance

Provided at least 91,951 individuals (47,597male, 44,354 female) in 15,533 rural households with improved access to safe water
